Kurtley Beale: New Wasps signing suffers knee injury playing for NSW Waratahs
Kurtley Beale suffered a "very significant" knee injury less than a day after Wasps announced they would sign the Australia back.
The 27-year-old was hurt in the first minute of NSW Waratahs' Super Rugby victory over the Bulls on Saturday.
It is feared he has ruptured a patellar tendon and could face up to a year out.
Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson told the Sydney Morning Herald: "Until we have scans we don't know the severity... but at this stage it's very significant."
Beale, capped 60 times by Australia, is set to join Wasps at the end of the Super Rugby season in a deal that is reported to make him the highest-paid player in the Premiership.
Former Australia fly-half Michael Lynagh, who was summarising for Sky Sports, said he had spoken to people who had been in contact with Beale.
He said: "They think it's a ruptured patellar tendon, which is quite an unusual and serious injury.
"They reckon he's going to be operated on in the next 48 hours and it's sort of a six-to-12-month injury."
