British number two Heather Watson secured a place in the Madrid Open despite losing in the qualifying round.
Watson lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni but went through as a lucky loser after Yulia Putintseva withdrew because of illness.
British number three Naomi Broady lost 3-6 6-3 6-3 to Monica Puig in a match lasting two hours and seven minutes.
Laura Robson will take on Victoria Azarenka in the main draw after using her protected ranking of 58 to enter.
The 22-year-old missed 17 months with a wrist injury, and has won just one WTA main draw match since returning last summer.
She will face the two-time Australian Open champion, who is ranked fifth in the world after winning the titles in Indian Wells and Miami, at about 16:00 BST on Sunday.
British number one Johanna Konta will play France's Caroline Garcia in her opening match at approximately the same time.
Watson, ranked 19 places higher than Mirjana Lucic-Baroni at 56 in the world, led by a break in the first set before the Croat fought back.
The 23-year-old needs positive results over the next month to ensure she qualifies for the Rio Olympics.
